Man wanted on warrant steals Lorain Police cruiser

30-year-old Brandon Pettry told Lorain Police he was homeless and having a bad day.

Lorain — 30-year-old Brandon Pettry told Lorain Police he was homeless and having a bad day.

He said he had been arguing with his family when they called police.

Pettry said they were trying to set him up.

A Lorain police officer says he’ll give Pettry a ride to the library.

He’s not cuffed. It was “a courtesy ride” according to the police report.

It turns out Pettry had a warrant out for felony breaking and entering.

Pettry learns he now has to be dropped off to Lorain County Sheriff’s Deputies.

From the backseat of the cruiser, Pettry says, "I don’t know what they want me for. I'm spreading nothing but love and I'm not creating any drama."

Pettry goes on to explain it’s all over a court date he missed because he was “in the psych ward diagnosed bipolar and schizophrenic."

Then, a bit of foreshadowing from the backseat.

"This is all getting a little out of hand now. It’s too much. If the fox is cornered he's gonna bite," Pettry says, accusing the officers now of setting him up as well.

Just before Lorain police were going to hand Pettry off to a Sheriff deputy, the 6’ 200 pound fox must have figured he had nothing to lose.

Cameras in the cruiser show him busting out of the cruiser. He immediately squares up and starts fighting all 3 officers.

He punches them in the head, knocks at least one to the ground.

Pepperspray doesn’t work. Again, it’s all caught on camera.

The ensuing video shows Pettry jumping into the driver seat of the cruiser.

Officers tase him through the passenger window, with no effect.

And Pettry is off, with the sirens on.

Southbound on Broadway from the Dollar General parking lot, he even sets his felony flight from police to a tune he can sing to.

He busts through so many red lights we lost count.

And no telling how many lives Pettry put on the line at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

Soon, multiple jurisdictions are involved.

29 painfully long minutes later a stop stick crash, the back window of the cruiser blown out, and Brandon Pettry's day got worse.

He surrenders and is charged with three counts of felonious assault on a police officer, escape, resisting arrest, grand theft auto of a police car, and felony fleeing and eluding.

It turns out those are just the latest in what we found out is a laundry list of run-ins with the law.

Three convictions for other felony crimes, driving under eleven open suspensions.

"It should be noted", the police report says, “Brandon also has four convictions for driving under suspension in the last three years”.

Safe to say, Friday’s escapade will do nothing to improve his driving record.
