Summit County Sheriff's Office arrests man connected to porch pirate thefts across five cities

The 33-year-old man was apprehended on March 16.

On Thursday, Sheriff Kandy Fatheree of the Summit County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of a man in connection to porch pirate thefts across the county. 

According to a press release, Charles W. Dempsie Jr., 33, was arrested on Tuesday for various thefts in the cities of Akron, Barberton, Coventry, Green, and Springfield.

In January, the Summit County Sheriff's Office was first alerted to missing packages and mail.

After an investigation, Dempsie was identified as a suspect in the crimes, and on March 16, police located the 33-year-old at a hotel in Green. He attempted to flee the scene, but was apprehended by deputies. Officials found stolen goods in his vehicle and hotel room following a search.

The 33-year-old suspect also had outstanding warrants for Aggravated Drug Possession, Probation Violation, and Parole Violation according to the Sheriff's Office. 

Dempsie has been booked into Summit County Jail and has been charged with Theft, with other charges pending the results of the ongoing investigation.

If anyone believes they were a victim of one of these thefts, they should call the Summit County Sheriff’s Detective Bureau at (33) 643-8637. To date, several victims have been identified, and had stolen items returned to them.
