If you let it, cancer can consume you. But why not, battle it over beers. One Cleveland guy is “M-Powering” other cancer dudes, as they say, in local bars.
“I have had this brush with death,” said M-Powerment Founder Dan Dean.
In between sips of beer, Dan Dean talks about cancer. He approaches the conversation like he would any other with optimism and a clear understanding.
“It probably crystallized when I was going through the grieving process with my mom,” said Dean.
Doctors diagnosed Dean with Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma when he was 23.
Dean added, “I decided I would be cured the day I stopped treatment."
That was more than 10 years ago. But the obstacles were not over.
“My mom was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in 2012 and that kind of cancer does not have particularly good survival rates,” said Dean.
Dean beat cancer. His mom did not.
“I wanted to make as great of an impact as I could,” said Dean.
Dean created a formula. Cancer dudes, plus beer, plus life changing tools equals, men kicking cancer's ass.
Dean noticed there was nothing out there like it for men.
“Men taking care of men,” said Dean. “Making it okay for a bunch of dudes to get together once they are done with treatment and be like this is fine. This is normal. This is part of the human experience."
He hopes M-Powerment creates a ripple effect.
“M stands for male,” said Dean. “Male empowerment. So it is really to let guys know it is alright to go out and take care of your stuff."
With a whole life left to live.
Dean added, “Why would you lead anything but an amazing life if you had the opportunity to? Use the lessons we have learned from cancer to really propel ourselves for a life that's worth living."
The first M-Powerment event is Saturday September 24 from 9 to 3 at Market Garden in Ohio City. There is also one on Sunday September 25th from 10-3 across the street at Bier Markt. You can register on their website.
Dean also plans to offer M-Powerment events in different cities. Next stop is Chicago in November.
