The Parma Police Department has arrested a 19-year-old who led officials on a dangerous high-speed car chase early Thursday morning.
According to officials, the chase began around 12:15 a.m. on Ridge Road and Snow Road after officers spotted a vehicle, driven by 19-year-old Donay Johnson, with expired plates. Police attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver sped off.
A second officer was able to deploy spike strips just south of Pearl Road, which the suspect's vehicle hit. Despite driving over the spikes, Johnson was able to continue onto I-480 near east headed towards CR-176.
At this point, police say the pursuit was terminated as officers witnessed Johnson's back left tire come off. Johnson continued to drive and officers were then given permission to resume the pursuit, now near I-90 east headed toward Chester Avenue.
Near Superior Avenue and East 49th Street, officers terminated the pursuit a second time.
It was while officers watched the suspect flee, they also witness Johnson attempt to swerve around another vehicle, and drive off the side of the road, striking a utility pole in the 7100 block of Superior Avenue.
The car did a full 360-degree spin before coming to a complete stop on the south side of Superior Avenue. Johnson attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was arrested shortly after.
Johnson has been charged with driving without a valid driver’s license, obedience to traffic control signals, expired plates, and felony fleeing and eluding.
