Schwebel Baking Co. to close Solon bakery

The facility that employees approximately 200 people will close in May.

Schwebel Baking Company announced Monday that it would close its Solon bakery in May. 

The decision came as an effort " to meet customer demand and remain competitive in the marketplace," the company said in a press release. The company says it will focus its efforts on " a core group of products and customers." 

The Solon bakery employs more than 200 employees and produces a variety of baked breads and rolls.The facility's employees are being offered the opportunity to apply for open positions at other distribution and manufacturing facilities. 

"Decisions like this are always difficult and not easy," said Lori Mickholtzick, Director of Human resources. 

Schwebel Baking Company was founded in 1906 by Joseph and Dora Schwebel. The company employs roughly 1,200 people and operates bakeries in Youngstown and Hebron and has distribution centers in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia.
