Brook Park community comes together to remember baby shot, killed in murder-suicide

"Grief doesn't end in a day. It's a journey. And you need people to rally to your support, and to show them that you're not forgotten in the process."

BROOK PARK, Ohio — The Brook Park community came together Saturday night to mourn the loss of a 10-month-old girl who was recently shot and killed in a murder-suicide.

Dozens of people huddled in the cold in remembrance of Alice Elizabeth, who was shot last weekend, as well as to support her mother and other family members.

Sarah Carter, Alice's mother, spoke with 3News' Emma Henderson Friday, explaining the events of the night in which her daughter was killed by her ex-boyfriend and Alice's father, who had allegedly broken in and demanded to see the infant. Three other children were in the home at the time but were able to hide.

The family's pastor hopes the vigil will bring the family comfort.

"Grief doesn't end in a day. It's a journey. And you need people to rally to your support, and to show them that you're not forgotten in the process," said Rev. James Beight.

Carter, who was shot in the leg by her ex-boyfriend, is healing and working to make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else.

"In the eyes of some people, it just looks like he's trying to take custody of her. But in the eyes of someone who has dealt with him stalking me and harassing me for months and months and months, I had a feeling it was more than that." Sarah said.

The Brook Park woman said that she had wanted to get a protection order against her ex, knowing he was armed and angry. But, she says according to an attorney, she wasn't able to meet the qualifications.

"I believe I would've had a protection order if it wasn't so hard to get, however, the look on his face that day, the way he kicked in my door, a piece of paper would not have stopped him," Carter said.
