Furloughed federal workers qualify for unemployment in Ohio

With the help comes some important conditions to keep in mind

CLEVELAND — Furloughed federal workers in the state of Ohio are eligible for Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits.

Officials with Ohio’s Department of Job and Family Services says so far 628 federal employees have sought state assistance. However, with the help comes some conditions:

First, the UI benefits are only available to furloughed workers, not the so-called “essential workers” that are showing up to work every day.

Second, there is a cap on what you can collect. Federal workers with multiple dependents can not exceed $598 per week.

Third – if you receive backpay from Uncle Sam down the road, you will need to repay the state for the UI dollars provided during the shutdown.

And if you take the state up on this UI benefit, you must prove that you are actively looking for other work. Their requirement is “…apply for two positions each week”.
