Shortly after Dr. Amy Acton announced her resignation on Thursday, the Ohio Democratic Party released a statement in support of the now-former Ohio Department of Health Director.

The statement reads:

“We are all grateful for the leadership shown by Dr. Amy Acton during the coronavirus crisis and her unmatched strength and determination in protecting the health and well-being of Ohioans. Dr. Acton rose above the petty partisan politics that so often dominates Columbus, and she did it with uncommon grace, humility and professionalism. She became the epitome of a public servant and leader and a role model to so many. Her decision to step down is Ohio’s loss. She has saved countless lives.”

Acton's resignation comes after the Youngstown native spent the past three months serving as one of the faces of Ohio's response to the coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to her calm demeanor and measured approach, Acton received plenty of praise and recognition for her work, with a New York Times video column calling her "the leader we wish we all had."

But while Acton was lauded by many, she also faced criticism from those who believed the state's response to the coronavirus, which included a stay-at-home order that lasted throughout April, was too severe. In May, the Ohio House of Representatives passed legislation that would curb Acton's ability to issue orders longer than 14 days (the bill failed to pass in the state senate), while some protesters demonstrated outside of her personal residence.

Asked about the backlash she's received in her role on Thursday, Acton said, "that was not my focus." She will continue to serve as DeWine's Chief Health Advisor with Lance Himes taking over as Ohio Department of Health's Interim Director, a role he had previously held.
