Ohio’s first medical marijuana dispensaries open in Canton, Sandusky

For those looking to visit a dispensary when they open, security will be tight. Only patients and caregivers who are actively registered will be allowed inside the dispensary doors.

SANDUSKY, Ohio — It has been years in the making, but the day has finally arrived. Ohio’s first two medical marijuana dispensaries opened their doors Wednesday in Canton and Sandusky.

Canton welcomes "The Botanist" and Sandusky welcomes "The Forest."

One person was already waiting in line at The Forest in Sandusky when our crews arrived to cover the story hours before the location's 9 a.m. opening.

A third dispensary set to open is CY+ in Wintersville.

Dispensaries are warning customers that lines are likely, and there’s a good chance the program starts off with a small inventory of products. But for patients who have been waiting, anything is better than nothing.

There is plenty of demand for medicinal products containing marijuana in Ohio. According to the state's Medical Marijuana Control Program, 4,964 patient recommendations have been submitted through the registry in four weeks. Of those recommendations, 3,575 people have activated their registry card.

WKYC was given a sneak peek inside The Forest last week, and a tour of The Botanist on Tuesday.
