Cleveland teacher receives helping hand to get kids excited about reading

Ebony Donley volunteers her time outside of the classroom to get children excited about reading.

CLEVELAND — There's a dedicated teacher in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, who volunteers her time outside of the classroom to get children excited about reading.

Ebony Donley coordinates the "Collinwood Reads" program in partnership with WKYC. We wanted to show our appreciation for her, and teamed up with a local businesses to surprise her.

Donley puts on a monthly program, Family Literacy Night, at the Collinwood Recreation Center to help families build reading and math skills. She was paying for the food herself, and lately, the attendance had grown to 50-plus people.

So Mike Simens, owner of Mr. Chicken restaurants, stopped by her May event to provide free food for all her guests, and announced that he would be providing free catering for her Family Literacy Nights until the end of the year.

Donley also received two baskets full of craft kits and teacher supplies donated by JOANN Stores, headquartered in Hudson.
