Local non-profits hoping for successful 'Giving Tuesday' amid coronavirus outbreak

Coronavirus motivated Giving Tuesday to move from winter to May to motivate people to help local non-profits.

CLEVELAND — Giving Tuesday, normally follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the late fall. However, this year, the organization moved it to May.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank is used to packing up and giving away thousands of boxes of food to help our community. Karen Pozna, Greater Cleveland Food Bank Director of Communications and Special Events says the organization continues to experience a significant increase in need.

“With so many thousands and thousands of people in our area unemployed we want to make sure that people have the food that they need to get through this crisis,” says Pozna.

The organization Giving Tuesday moved up its annual donation day in order to help out all of the organizations struggling to help their communities. And tomorrow, your contribution will go even farther!

“Donations will be matched. So typically for every dollar, that you donate to the greater Cleveland food bank we can provide four nutritious meals, in the next day it will be 8 nutritious meals,” says Pozna.

You may also want to consider donating to a non-profit like Recess Cleveland. Pre-coronavirus, Recess Cleveland Executive Director Alexander Robertson says it was known for family friendly pop-up activities.

“We did pop-up kick ball, dodge ball, soccer games all over the city. Our goal is to get kids and their parents to drop their cell phones and become social again,” says Robertson.

Since most of their 75 games aren’t possible with social distancing recommendations, Recess Cleveland is now shifting focus to develop activity buckets to help parents out.

“A five-gallon bucket filled with playground balls, maybe a kite making kit, some playing cards and projects like a kit to make giant bubbles at your home,” says Robertson.

If you would like to help local coronavirus efforts, the Greater Cleveland COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund gives donated money to local front line workers.

Whether you can give $20, $200, $2,000 or something in between, consider a donation to a non-profit or supporting a business in order to give back on Tuesday May 5th, 2020.
