WKYC's newest literacy neighborhood is Collinwood

Guest reader Dorsena Drakeford takes part in the Black History Month event put on by Collinwood Reads

CLEVELAND — In honor of Black History Month, WKYC’s Dorsena Drakeford recently took part in an “African American Read-In” at the Salvation Army Cleveland Temple in Cleveland’s Collinwood neighborhood.

A variety of books that shed light on African-American history and achievements are read aloud at the annual event, held at the Salvation Army.

Collinwood is Cleveland’s latest community to be recognized as a Little Free Library Neighborhood, a literacy initiative spearheaded by WKYC.

To be a Little Free Library Neighborhood, community partners must pledge to organize at least one family literacy event per month. The WKYC initiative began with Slavic Village Reads in 2017, and has expanded to include Hough Reads, Promise Reads in Central, and now Collinwood Reads.

Collinwood Reads events have included book giveaways, a read-aloud with police officers, and a monthly Family Game Night with a literacy theme.
