$5 million bond set for man accused of rapes on Portage County bike trail

RAVENNA -- Bond was set at $5 million for the man accused of a series of rapes that occurred along the Berlin Hike and Bike Trail.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, Shawn Michael Wendling, 37, pleaded not guilty to 14 charges, including rape, attempted rape and kidnapping.

Wendling's trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 30, according to the Beacon Journal.

Wendling was arrested earlier this month after DNA evidence from the assaults matched a relative in the database.

Wendling is accused of a series of sexual assaults, including one involving a 68-year-old woman. Wendling allegedly grabbed the victim, threw her down an embankment and sexually assaulted her before taking her belongings.

That same day, another woman reported a man had slapped her on her buttocks.

Another incident occurred Aug. 13, when a 47-year-old woman said she was knocked from her bike, down an embankment, where she was robbed and sexually assaulted.

A fourth incident occurred Sept. 4, when a 30-year-old woman said she was assaulted in a Poland Township park.
