Community remembers beloved Kent Roosevelt High School teacher who died after being hit by car

"He taught students how to be the best version of themselves."

It's hard to miss Dr. Mitch Lambert's classroom.

Images of him and memories with students cover the walls. He was a beloved chemistry teacher at Roosevelt High School, known for his compassion, kindness, and humor.

"Not everybody has a brother like that," Nevin Lambert said. "I've been very lucky to have him."

You could sometimes find Mitch on his bicycle, riding through the Rootstown community where he grew up. But a week ago, Mitch was struck from behind by a 72-year-old driver—left seriously injured.

"We were heartbroken," Roosevelt Principal Dennis Love told us.

Mitch's final moments were captured in a video taken by family. He was given a "walk of honor" at University Hospitals, the very first such walk at the hospital's main campus. The hallway filled with people showing up for a moment of silence, and to honor Mitch as an organ donor. He died shortly thereafter.

"They tell us [his organs] will affect 25 people," his brother said. "It's exactly what my brother would have wanted."

Love says it's a reflection of who Mitch was as a teacher.

"He taught students how to be the best version of themselves," he remembered.

Nevin Lambert says it speaks to the way his brother lived his life—in pursuit of helping others.

"We're simply grateful for the time that we had with him," he said.

Beyond the impact Mitch's life has had on those around him and potentially dozens of others, the family is also sharing another message—focused on distracted driving. While we're not sure what caused the accident, the family says this serves as a reminder to everyone to pay attention to the roads.
