Suspect, victim identified following Kent apartment standoff

A man has died following a hostage situation with police in northeast Ohio.

Officials have identified the suspect involved in a Kent apartment standoff as 27-year-old Christopher Carter.

Police tell WKYC they were called to the Villages at Franklin Crossing apartment complex on Silver Meadows Boulevard to check for a “suspicious person" around 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

When officers approached the man, he barricaded himself inside of the building’s basement laundry room while holding a woman captive with a knife.

After roughly seven hours of negotiations, officials were able to safely rescue the woman around 9 p.m

Carter was shot and killed by police.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Amber Weathers.

She was taken to a local hospital and determined to be unharmed.

Officials said an investigation helped to discover Weathers already had an outstanding warrant through another agency for a charge unrelated to this hostage situation.

The woman is now in custody at the Portage County's Sheriff's Office.

She's not facing charges through Kent's police department, officials added.

It is not clear if there is any relationship between the suspect and the woman.

Authorities say the female hostage was taken to an area hospital.

Police say she was not injured.

The apartment building has about 12 units inside.

Kent police said around 10 adults and 10 children were evacuated safely.

Authorities worked to get those evacuated temporary living arrangements after being out of their homes for several hours.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation, Portage County Prosecutors' Office, and Portage County Coroner's Office responded to the scene.

The BCI is now independently continuing the investigation.
