Suspect shot and killed by Canton police officer; Ohio BCI investigating

Authorities claim the man was firing his own weapon before the officer fired back and struck him.

CANTON, Ohio — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation confirms a shooting in Canton involving a police officer early Saturday morning left one suspect dead. Authorities say it began just after midnight on 10th Street Southwest.

According to officials, an officer who was outside of his vehicle confronted a subject that began shooting. The officer, who was "in fear for his safety," fired his weapon at the subject and struck him. The subject was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead. He has since been identified as 46-year-old James Williams.

The officer involved, whose name has not yet been released, was not injured in the incident and has been placed on administrative leave per department protocol. The "ongoing" investigation is being handled by the Ohio BCI.
