An "abundance of students" from Stow-Munroe Falls High School stayed home on Friday after rumors of threats made against the school surfaced.

The Stow Police Department reports that it conducted a sweep of the high school on Friday morning as an extra measure of safety in light of the violence rumors. "Those rumors were thoroughly investigated and were not substantiated," the department reported on its Facebook page. "We want everyone to feel confident in coming to school this morning."

To help make students feel more secure, the Stow Police Department's School Resource Officer (SRO) was on site early and there was an extra police presence in the building.

"We take these matters seriously and immediately began coordinating with the schools and looking into the circumstances. Contact was made with multiple students and their families and we determined that the rumors were unsubstantiated and that there was no threat," Stow police Capt. Bryan Snavely told 3News. "Stow PD has an excellent working relationship with the Stow Munroe Falls City Schools.  We have a full-time SRO assigned to the High School and also provide security at the other schools in the City on a daily basis throughout the school year."

Friday's incident in Stow comes as other districts in within Northeast Ohio have reported recent threats directed at their schools. Berea-Midpark Middle School closed Friday “out of an abundance of caution” amid a social media threat from late Thursday night.

Earlier this week, Elyria City Schools said a student was arrested "in connection with threats that were directed at Westwood Middle School."

Mogadore police in Summit County also said they were investigating a situation this week after their department “was provided a screenshot of a conversation from a student indicating planned violence at the high school.”
