U of A's Phi Delta Theta gathers to remember brother killed in stabbing

Members of Phi Delta Theta gathered at 8 p.m. Monday in front of their fraternity house to remember brother Duncan Unternaher. Police say the University of Akron student was stabbed by his roommate early Saturday morning.

Members of Phi Delta Theta gathered at 8 p.m. Monday in front of their fraternity house to remember brother Duncan Unternaher. Police say the University of Akron student was stabbed by his roommate early Saturday morning.

The fraternity says Unternaher died Sunday afternoon.

Members describe 23-year-old Unternaher as inviting, outgoing and silly. He was studying sales as a senior at the university.

Hundreds gathered outside Phi Delta Theta for the candlelight vigil.

“No matter what sort of interaction you had with Duncan, it could have been a second or years, I think we can all agree Duncan was instantly one of your best friends,” said one speaker at the vigil.

“I never saw him upset or angry. He always had the biggest smile on his face at all times and never failed to make others laugh,” said another friend.

22-year-old Kendall Scheid, Unternaher’s roommate, was arrested for the crime and booked into the Summit County Jail.

The 911 call, placed by a third roommate, reveals Scheid tried to help Unternaher after the stabbing.

“They are in the bathroom. He is keeping pressure on the wound, trying to keep him elevated,” said 911 caller Devin Rogala to the dispatcher.

The caller stated that both roommates were very drunk.

According to Akron Police the argument started over fast food, then Scheid got a knife and stabbed Unternaher in the chest.

Unternaher was taken to Akron City Hospital where he passed away.

This GoFundMe account has a goal of $5,000 to donate to the Unternaher family.

University of Akron President Matthew Wilson attended Monday’s vigil and announced Unternaher’s family will receive a diploma in his name as he was due to graduate in May.
