Two Youngstown State University students from Sierra Leone killed in car crash

The other two student passengers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. All four students are reportedly from Freetown in Sierra Leone, in western Africa.

RAVENNA, Ohio — Two students at Youngstown State University were killed in a car crash on IR-76 on Friday night, according to the Ravenna Post of The Ohio State Highway Patrol.

One of three passengers Nekian F. Sesay, 19, died at the scene near mile marker 50, and driver Muctar B. Kamara was taken to University Hospitals Portage, where he did not survive.

The other two passengers, also YSU students, were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

All four students are reportedly from Freetown in Sierra Leone, in western Africa.

According to the OSHP report, Kamara veered a 2003 Honda Accord into a grass-covered median on the left side of IR-76, then overcorrected and struck multiple trees on the right side of the two-lane highway, causing the car to flip over.

While an investigation is still underway, authorities believe “speed or driver distraction” could have caused the crash.

Authorities say Sesay was riding in the backseat of the vehicle, and that both she and Kamara were not wearing their seatbealts at the time of the incident.

The single-car crash occurred on Friday at around 6:35 p.m on Friday.
