PHOENIX - Cleveland police warned people about GoFundMe accounts set up to help the family of Robert Godwin, who was shot and killed over the weekend by a man who streamed the murder live on Facebook.

There's an all-out manhunt underway for Steve Stephens, the man accused of pulling the trigger after he told Facebook viewers he was "looking for someone to kill."

The most successful of the GoFundMe campaigns set up to benefit Godwin's family was created by an ASU student in Phoenix. Wesley Davis told 12 News he's not trying to scam anyone, just help Godwin's family.

But will the money get there?

Davis has no connection to Godwin's family, but told 12 News he started the campaign after watching the Facebook Live video.

"I just felt so bad for this family," Davis said.

When Cleveland police said there was no official fund set up for Godwin's family, Davis said his campaign started coming under fire.

He said he reached out to GoFundMe to see what they could do.

GoFundMe sent 12 News a statement, saying they were guaranteeing the money would reach Godwin's family, no matter what:

"It’s not uncommon for someone to create a GoFundMe to help another individual after a news report. We have spoken with the GoFundMe campaign organizer, members of the family, and local authorities. We’ll guarantee the money will be deposited directly into the family’s bank account.

"As with any event, there may be multiple people who want to help. With regard to additional GoFundMes, we are directing everyone to the campaign above. Regardless, all funds raised for the Godwin’s will be transferred directly to the family. It’s important to remember that our platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means funds are guaranteed to go to the right place."

Since Davis is on the record saying the money will go to Godwin's family and GoFundMe has all but endorsed his campaign and guaranteed the money will go to the family, we're marking the campaign "Verified."
