Willoughby Fire Chief shares powerful message after Mentor police officer dies after hit-and-run

Chief Ungar took to social media Sunday morning after learning of the death of a Mentor police officer after a hit- and run.

"Having spent many years responding to incidents on local roads and freeways, it disgusts me how impatient drivers can be and completely disregard what is happening on the side of the road," said Chief Todd Ungar of the Willoughby Fire Department.

Ungar took to social media Sunday morning after learning of the death of a Mentor police officer after a hit- and run.

"Wherever you are going can wait those few extra moments and isn’t as important as what is happening on the side of the road," said Ungar.

He continued, " I’m tired of seeing signs dedicating that portion of the road to a trooper or police officer because they weren’t afforded a lane of protection or the courtesy of taking your foot off the gas for a short period of time. That’s why I’m angry."
