NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A 9-year-old Canton girl is recovering after she was apparently bitten by a shark Friday morning in Florida, WKYC sister station WESH in Orlando confirms.

Officials say Maggie Crum was vacationing with her family at New Smyrna Beach when she felt a bite on her lower right leg while wading in the water. She was later taken to the hospital by her mother with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Maggie is from Canton. She later spoke with WESH's Claire Metz after receiving treatment, and seemed to be in good spirits.

According to WESH, this is the 10th shark bite in Volusia County, Florida this year. It is known as the "shark bite capital of the world."
