When the new animated "Grinch" movie came out, it spurred an office debate: Which holiday movies are decent? In particular, which movies about a green guy trying to ruin Christmas are best?
We found there was a difference in opinion that coincided with a generation gap: I, the young millennial, adored Jim Carrey as the self-loathing, ornament-eating, heavily made-up Grinch from 2000. My colleagues pooh-poohed my take, saying instead that the 1966 TV special (which I admittedly haven't seen) or new animated film are far preferable.
Another argument was ignited over whether Will Ferrell's "Elf" is a holiday classicl. I argued that "Santa! I KNOW him!" is one of the greatest movie lines of all time. My colleagues shook their heads.
It's nice to see that at least moviegoers surveyed by Fandango are on my side.
According to 1,000 film fans ages 18-34 surveyed by streaming site FandangoNOW, the holiday movies they are most likely to stream around Thanksgiving and Christmas are "Home Alone," "Elf," "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and – despite the fact that Bruce Willis himself doesn't call it a Christmas movie – "Die Hard."
