WKYC is joining Mental Health Awareness Week with a series of stories on mental health, those who have struggled with it, and how to find the help you need.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), more than 43 million adults experience mental illness in a given year, meaning one in five American adults endure mental illness. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

Treatment is readily available to those who need help, but NAMI reports that nearly 60% of adults with a mental illness have not sought treatment within the previous year.
