Coin toss decides 4 tie votes in Cuyahoga County primary election: video

This is proof that every vote counts.

CLEVELAND -- Four races ended in a tie during the May primary election in Cuyahoga County, and the final decision came down to a coin toss.

The latest step in the process for all of the tied races was to flip a coin at Tuesday's board meeting.

Here were the tied contests:

  • Republican State Central Committee, Senate District 23: Doris Durica and Candice Miller each had 5,128 votes.
  • Dem County Central Com East Cleveland: Jacqueline Goodrum and O. Mays each had 36 votes.
  • Dem County Central Com Shaker Heights: Mary O. Boyle and Lisa D. Nguyen each had 81 votes.
  • Dem County Central Com Middleburg Heights: David Dean and Dan Jenkins each had two votes.

Thursday's coin tosses went in the favor of Miller, Mays, Nguyen and Dean.

"I have been in the election business for over 10 years and I have never seen anything of this magnitude," said Pat McDonald, director of the board of elections.

The contest will then be subject to an automatic recount. If a tie remains, the outcome of the coin toss will stand.

Two other issues are also being recounted since the vote total differences are less than one half of one percent. These include:

  • Issue 2: Beachwood CSD bond issue and tax levy -- 2,030 in favor; 2,035 against.
  • Issue 12: North Olmsted bond issue -- 3,300 in favor; 3,331 against.
