Kamala Harris to make campaign stop in Cleveland this Friday

Details of the Democratic vice presidential nominee's visit have not yet been announced.

CLEVELAND — The Democratic nominee for vice president is expected to make her first campaign stop in Northeast Ohio later this week.

U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris will travel to Cleveland on Friday, the Biden-Harris campaign announced Wednesday morning. Exact details regarding her trip have not yet been released.

Harris, the junior senator from California, was selected by former Vice President Joe Biden to be his running mate back in August. She is the first woman of color to appear on any major presidential ticket, and would be the first female vice president in American history should Biden win the November election.

The COVID-19 pandemic has limited in-person campaign events in 2020 due to social distancing concerns, with Biden making only one stop in Northeast Ohio since March following his debate in Cleveland with President Donald Trump. Trump has been more keen to hold his traditional rallies despite criticism, although those took a back seat for a time after the president himself tested positive for the coronavirus and needed more than a week to recover.

Polls currently show Biden and Trump neck-and-neck in Ohio. No one has won the presidency without also winning the Buckeye State since John F. Kennedy way back in 1960.
