COLUMBUS (AP) - Democrat Kathleen Clyde has resigned her Ohio House seat to take an appointment as Portage County commissioner.

The 39-year-old Clyde, of Kent, had served eight years in the House and so was unable to return due to term limits. She lost a bid for Ohio secretary of state in November.

In a statement, Clyde said it was "good to be home" after four terms in "a gerrymandered legislature whose conservative majorities seemed increasingly out of touch with the struggles of everyday Ohioans."

Her resignation came last Thursday, the same day the Portage County Democrats' central committee named her to the commission vacancy.

She replaces Democrat Mike Kerrigan, who suddenly resigned four weeks after winning a two-year term in November. Kerrigan was appointed in December 2017 after a commissioner's death.
