CLEVELAND -- The swimming portion of today's USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship (USATAGNC) at Edgewater Beach has been canceled by race officials and the United States Coast Guard because of strong currents in Lake Erie, a news release stated Sunday.
The race has been changed from a triathlon (swim-bike-run) to a duathlon (run-bike-run). The course will be a 2.72-kilometer run, 20-kilometer bike, then another 2.72-kilometer run.
Athletes went off in a time-trial start. They started at 7:30 a.m. after a 30 minute delay.
USA Triathlon on Saturday announced the death of 75-year-old Jim Hix, who was pulled from Lake Erie by the Coast Guard during the race. Resuscitation efforts to save Hix were unsuccessful.
In a statement, the organization said:
"Our sport lost a member of its beloved community and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Jim's wife, Ann, his family and friends. As one of the nation's top multisport athletes in his age group, Jim and USA Triathlon shared a close relationship and his passing is particularly difficult."
Hix's exact cause of death is not known at this time.
