SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — The Shaker Heights Police Department is investigating an Uber crash that killed two people Saturday night, including a math teacher who worked at Beachwood City Schools.

The crash involving two vehicles happened around 11 p.m. near South Woodland Road and Warrensville Center Road.

One of those victims has been identified as Barbara Becker of Shaker Heights. The other was idenfitifed as Arthur Gugick, a teacher from Beachwood.

The school district issued the following statement on Facebook about Gugick's death:

Dear Beachwood Community,

With great sadness we are informing you that Art Gugick, our high school math teacher, was killed in a car accident Saturday night. Mr. Gugick and a passenger were in an Uber that was struck by a driver who ran a red light. Both he and the passenger were killed.

At this time, we are in contact with Mr. Gugick's family, but do not yet know about his funeral arrangements. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Our staff have been made aware of this tragedy and we are putting supports in place for them and for our students tomorrow.

We will pull together as a community to support Mr. Gugick's family and to support one another through difficult circumstances.

Thank you,
Bob Hardis
Superintendent

The driver of the other vehicle, a 31-year old man, was treated at Ahuja before being taken into custody.

A public memorial service for Gugick will be held on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. at the high school, followed by a funeral service at 11.
