WASHINGTON (WUSA9)--It's been 13 very long seasons for Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin.

Alex Ovechkin can finally add Stanley Cup champion to his list of accolades after he helped his team defeat the Vegas Golden Knights in a historic Game 5 that gave the franchise their first ever Stanley Cup.

Alex Ovechkin has won all there is to win except for what he won on Thursday night.

The only other professional athlete to wait longer than 13 seasons with their original team to win a championship was John Elway.

Elway waited 15 seasons before he won his first championship in 1997 with the Denver Broncos.

"It doesn't matter what happened before," Ovechkin told media through his gap-toothed grin. "We just won it."
