Belmont Stakes to set pace for Triple Crown, with Tiz the Law favored

You can watch coverage of the race on WKYC 3News starting at 2:45 p.m.

ELMONT, N.Y. — Tiz the Law is the star of a 10-horse field for today's Belmont Stakes, perhaps the biggest event in U.S. sports since the coronavirus pandemic shut down competition in mid-March.

The 3-year-old colt is the early 6-5 favorite. The Belmont is kicking off the Triple Crown series for the first time.

No fans or owners will be at the New York track for the $1 million race that is being run at a shorter distance this year. Tiz the Law is bidding to be the first New York-bred horse in 138 years to win.

Tiz the Law has the same owners and trainer as Funny Cide, who fell just short of the Triple Crown in 2003. A Belmont win would complete 82-year-old trainer Barclay Tagg's personal Triple Crown and make Tiz the Law the front-runner for the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby.

Even though the race won't have fans or owners at the track, you'll still be able to watch all of the action on WKYC 3News. Coverage will begin at 2:45 p.m.
