LIVE UPDATES: Urban Meyer announces retirement, Ryan Day introduced as Ohio State's new coach

Urban Meyer will retire as Ohio State's head coach following the Buckeyes' Jan. 1 matchup against Washington in the Rose Bowl.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Urban Meyer era in Columbus is coming to an end.

On Tuesday, the Ohio State head coach will announce his retirement, effective immediately after the Buckeyes' New Year's Day matchup with Washington in the Rose Bowl. Current Ohio State offensive coordinator Ryan Day will succeed Meyer as the Buckeyes' 25th head coach in program history.

At 2 p.m. ET, Meyer, Day and Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith will address the media to formally announce the transition. Follow along here for live updates and join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #3Buckeyes.

Urban Meyer on the state he's leaving the program in: "This would be a very tough day if we were a mess. Personally, it would be a mess."

- Urban Meyer: "This profession we've chosen is so fragile." Says he can't pinpoint when he made his decision to retire. Says the decision crossed his mind walking off the field after the win over Michigan. Says the early-signing period put pressure on him to make a decision.

- Urban Meyer: "I believe I will not coach again. I'm certain." Says he and his family will still live in Columbus.

- Meyer: "I believe in Ohio State. I believe in the spirit when you walk around the campus... I believe this is a different place. And I believe in our new head coach."
