Game preview
Coming off of four consecutive Big Ten championships and two straight appearances in the College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes enter Year 3 of the Ryan Day era with national championship aspirations. But with two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Justin Fields off to the NFL, Ohio State will be breaking in a new quarterback with redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud having been named the Buckeyes' starting signal-caller ahead of Thursday night's opener.
A former four-star prospect and the No. 2 ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2020 class, Stroud will have plenty to work with this season as Ohio State returns a pair of potential first-round picks in wide receiver Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. On defense, the Buckeyes also possess no shortage of talent with defensive end Zach Harrison and defensive tackle Garrett Haskell leading the way.
As for Minnesota, the Golden Gophers are coming off a 2020 campaign in which they amassed a 3-4 record and return 10 starters on both sides of the ball.
