Ohio State's Cotie McMahon named Big Ten Women's Basketball Freshman of the Year

As a starter in all 29 contests, McMahon has averaged 14.0 points per game and has scored at least 20 in 11 games. She is the 10th Buckeye to win the award.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State women's basketball forward Cotie McMahon was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, the crowning individual achievement for what has been an excellent debut for the Dayton area native.

As a starter in all 29 contests, McMahon has averaged 14.0 points per game and has scored at least 20 in 11 games. She was selected by both the conference coaches and media members and is the 10th Buckeye to win the award, the most recent being Kelsey Mitchell in 2015.

As expected, McMahon was also named to the all-freshman team (unanimously by the coaches), and additionally was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree. Laurel High School grad Taylor Thierry joined her on that second team with 13.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game, while Stark County native Taylor Mikesell was a first-team selection for the second consecutive year after tallying 17.3 points per game and a 40.6 shooting percentage from 3-point distance.

Thierry was also named to the all-defensive team by the coaches and was chosen as OSU's sportsmanship honoree. Adding to the list of accolades, junior Rikki Harris and senior Rebeka Mikulášiková received all-conference honorable mentions from the media.

Currently ranked 14th in the nation, Ohio State finished the regular season 23-6 and is seeded fourth in this week's Big Ten Tournament in Minneapolis, earning a double bye to the quarterfinals. The Buckeyes will face either 5-seed Michigan or 13-seed Penn State Friday afternoon.
