Asked on Sunday whether or not he thought Dwayne Haskins would be a Heisman Trophy finalist, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer made his expectation clear.
"He'll be in New York," Meyer said, referencing the ceremony to announce the winner on Saturday. "He's going one way or the other. I'll fly him there myself. The way he plays and his stats against those other quarterbacks, he's got to go to New York. I don't know if he'll win it. I don't know who's making those decisions."
Based on the most recent round of betting odds, Meyer can save his money -- although it still appears unlikely the Buckeyes' quarterback will leave the Big Apple with the most coveted piece of hardware in college football.
According to BetOnline via OddsShark, the odds of Haskins winning the Heisman Trophy remain at +2500 -- a slight improvement from the +3300 listing he was given a week ago. Those odds tie Haskins with West Virginia quarterback Will Grier for the third-best odds in the country, with Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray taking over as the new favorite at -160 over Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (+120).
For the betting uninitiated, a $100 return on a successful bet on Murray would require wagering $160, while a successful $100 wager on Haskins would return $2,500.
While those odds represent just a 3.8 percent implied probability of Haskins winning the award and a significant drop from Murray and Tagovailoa, his standing at No. 3 makes it likely he will in fact hear his name called when the finalists are announced on Monday evening. Following a 499-yard, 5-touchdown performance in Ohio State's 45-24 victory over Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday, Haskins likely punched his ticket to New York City with a resume that includes both the most passing yards (4,580) and touchdowns (47) in the country.
Last week, Haskins was named first-team all-conference, the Big Ten Offensive Player and Quarterback of the Year, as well as the recipient of the Chicago Tribune's Silver Football, which is presented annually to the league's top player.
This year's Heisman Trophy finalists will be announced on ESPN between 6:30 and 7 p.m. ET.
