Ohio State's Urban Meyer investigation to wrap Sunday, decision to follow next week

On Friday, Ohio State announced its independent investigation into Urban Meyer's handling of accusations of domestic violence made against a former assistant coach will conclude Sunday.

The working group investigating Ohio State football head coach Urban Meyer's handling of accusations of domestic violence made against a former assistant coach will complete its report on Sunday as planned.

A decision on Meyer's future with the team, made by school president Michael Drake, will follow next week.

On Friday afternoon, Ohio State released an update on its investigation and its timetable moving forward.

The statement read:

"The independent working group directing the investigation involving Urban Meyer announced today that the investigation will be completed on Sunday, as planned. The investigators will then prepare a report for the working group to be delivered next week.

"Following receipt, the working group will share the report with the Board of Trustees in an executive session to be held next week. As required by law, public notice of the meeting will be released at least 24 hours in advance. Following deliberations with the board, and appropriate time for consideration, President Michael V. Drake will announce his decision.

"Ohio State’s Board of Trustees had formed a special, independent working group to direct this investigation. Former Ohio House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson serves as chair of the working group. The investigation is being led by former Chair of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Mary Jo White. White is a senior chair with the national law firm Debevoise & Plimpton and is also a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

"Additional details will be shared next week."

Last month, wide receivers coach Zach Smith was fired from Ohio State after accusations of domestic violence made by his ex-wife were made public. Although Meyer initially denied being aware of the 2015 incident -- for which Smith was never charged -- a report from college football reporter Brett McMurphy later showed text messages that seemed to indicate the Buckeyes head coach knew of the accusations.

Ohio State proceeded to put Meyer on paid administrative leave as it opened an independent investigation into the matter. In a statement on Twitter two days later, the 3-time national champion head coach admitted he had been made aware of the accusations made against Smith and proceeded to follow the proper protocols.

Whether or not that was the case -- and whether or not it will be enough for Meyer to keep his job at Ohio State -- will be determined in the coming days. But for the first time since Meyer was put on leave two weeks ago, a timetable regarding his fate appears clear.
