Were Baker Mayfield's post-game comments well received? -- Bud Shaw's You Said It

CLEVELAND — "You Said It" is a reader participation column based on the premise that if you don't laugh about Cleveland sports you'll cry.

And that if you do laugh about Cleveland sports, you might still end up crying. But at least friends and family will like being around you more.

YOU SAID IT

Bud: Baker Mayfield subtly deflected some of the blame for 2 of 3 of interceptions (against Houston). Did he learn this from Coach Hue? — O. Bill Stone

I think you answered your own question. No. Not if he did it subtly.

Bud: Did you hear a big thud Sunday afternoon around 4 o’clock? — Jim Corrigan, Fairview Park.

Yes. At the time I was reviewing the career trajectory that brought me to the point where I'm known as the author of You Said It. I’m just surprised you heard it, too.

Bud: I think NFL players should be penalized 15 yards for "Unsportsmanlike Conduct" for WHEN they celebrate, not HOW they celebrate. You score the winning touchdown on a great catch with five seconds to go, I don’t care if you bring in a marching band complete with pole dancers. You deserve to celebrate. You get up strutting and signaling "first down" after a three-yard gain with your team down by 20 late in the fourth quarter, you SHOULD be penalized. — Mespo Jim.

I can only go by what I've seen in the last 20 years of Browns football. Any carry longer than 2.9 yards WAS a marching band moment for Trent Richardson.

Bud: Do you think it’s fair that Clemson gets a bye in the first round of the college football playoffs? — Jim, Mentor.

As a born-and-raised Catholic, I must say I think you’re forgetting Notre Dame’s 24-16 spanking of a Ball State team that finished 4-8. But I accept your apology.

Bud: I thought I would have a good one for you, but it was my bye week. — Eddie Vidmar.

Excuses, excuses. Hue Jackson’s Browns did their most satisfying work during the bye week.

Bud: Do you think now that Urban Meyer is leaving after the bowl game Ohio State will continue to use its vaunted paper mache defensive scheme next season? — Charles Billante, Parma.

Ohio State fans pointing to the Oklahoma defense as a reason why the Sooners don’t belong in the playoffs is like a fast food company health warning about the dangers of fast food.

Bud: Is there any truth to the rumor you are going to name your next child “Baker?” -- Skip, Tucson, Az.

No. But I'm still considering "Bowe" and "Britt" as future dog names.

Bud: I saw a picture of John Dorsey in a collared shirt, shorts, tennis shoes, baseball cap and a long dress coat. Any chance he was the guest speaker at a sports writer’s formal? — Bill, C-Town.

You Said It “winners” speak for the very average guy.
