Former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel announced Saturday morning that he is signing with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
A first-round pick in 2014, Manziel spent two seasons with the Cleveland Browns but the team released him in early 2016 amid a flurry of off-the-field concerns.
Manziel revealed his plans in a tweet, reading:
"Made the decision today to sign my contract with the CFL and further my football career after a long break. Very grateful for everyone that’s been supporting me along the way. I believe this is the best opportunity for me moving forward and I’m eager for what the future holds."
In a separate video announcing his new podcast on Barstool Sports, Manziel said that he would be joining the Tiger-Cats.
"It's not exactly the path I envisioned when I first started off this whole journey sitting in New York in the green room, waiting there forever to be (selected)," Manziel said. "Nevertheless, I can't sit on my ass anymore. I can't sit and let another season go by and watch football and not be on the field."
Manziel worked out at Texas A&M's pro day in March and said there that “if nothing pops up (in the NFL), then I’m going to play in the CFL."
The 25-year-old also played in a developmental league in the spring.
