Kenston slams Archbishop Alter 42-6 to win 1st ever state football championship

Quarterback Jon Tomcufcik, threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns in the rout.

Canton — A special season for the Kenston Bombers couldn’t have ended any better.

Kenston completely demolished the Archbishop Alter Knights on 42-6 Friday to win the OHSAA Division III state football championship. It’s the school’s first such title in the sport of football, and the first in any sport since boys soccer won it all in 1987.

The Bombers (14-1) tallied the game’s last 42 points and were led on offense by quarterback Jon Tomcufcik, who threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns (two to Bransen Stanley). Jack Porter also had a stellar afternoon on the ground, gaining 116 yards with three scores of his own.

Alter (13-2) opened the scoring with a 19-yard pass from Connor Bazelak to Derek Willits, but went completely downhill from there thanks to three interceptions. Logan Vargo led Kenston with 11 total tackles, while Timmy Matty and Matt Iklodi each added sacks.
