Chardon upsets Kenston 27-24 as time expires in WKYC.com's Game of the Week

Running back Jon McKnight took it in from three yards out as time expired.

For the second week in a row, WKYC.com saw a massive upset in our High School Football Game of the Week as the Chardon Hilltoppers upset the top-ranked Kenston Bombers 27-24.

Rather than try to send it to overtime with a field goal, Chardon head coach Mitch Hewitt elected to go for the win, and running back Jon McKnight took it in from three yards out as time expired. The Hilltoppers (6-3, 5-1 Western Reserve Conference) now have an inside track for a Division III playoff spot.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair, with the Bombers (8-1, 5-1 WRC) jumping out to a 16-7 lead and appearing to be in control just before the half thanks to touchdowns by Bransen Stanley and Jack Porter. However, Jacob Urbic scored on a 22-yard trick play, bringing Chardon to within two before intermission.

Wade Novak gave the Hilltoppers a 21-16 lead on a 53-yard run before Porter scored for the second time, and the Kenston took a 24-21 lead into the fourth quarter. But Chardon was able to run our nearly the final seven minutes, culminating in the McKnight run.

Chardon will take on Eastlake North next week with a chance to officially clinch a postseason berth, and while Kenston is likely already headed to the playoffs and will face Willoughby South next Friday, their AP No. 1 ranking will go up in smoke.
