Painesville Riverside beats Mayfield 14-6 in WKYC.com's Game of the Week

Touchdown runs by Andrew Keller and Danny Smith put the Beavers over the top.

It was a matchup often plagued by mistakes and bad weather, but when the dust (or raindrops) settled, the Painesville Riverside Beavers came away with a 14-6 win over the Mayfield Wildcats.

Mayfield was able to drive deep into Riverside territory toward the end of the game, but the Beaver defense held, giving them a share of the Western Reserve Conference championship with Kenston.

The Beavers (8-2, 6-1 WRC) actually trailed 6-0 midway through the third quarter, but touchdown runs by Andrew Keller and Danny Smith put them over the top. They are now riding a three-game winning streak heading into the Division II playoffs.

On the flip side, the Wildcats' (5-5, 4-3) playoff hopes were thrown into serious jeopardy, needing virtually everyone around them to lose in order to have a shot at the eighth and final seed. Michael Huss was able to break a scoreless halftime tie with a TD run, but those six points were the only ones his team could muster.

Riverside will take on Nordonia in the first round next Friday, while Mayfield did sneak in after all and will play unbeaten Hoban.
