Glenville boys win 18th title, Garrettsville's Conner Hunt shines in seated division at OHSAA track and field championships

In total, athletes from 28 Northeast Ohio schools combined for a total of 38 event championships this past weekend.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Another great season for track and field wrapped up with the OHSAA state championships this past weekend in Columbus, and Cleveland's Glenville High School proved once again why it is such a formidable powerhouse.

The Tarblooders took home their second straight Division II boys team title on Saturday, (literally) running past second place Woodridge by 26 points. It's the 18th state crown for the Glenville program, with eight coming under legendary head coach Ted Ginn Sr.

Glenville was aided in its quest for glory with individual titles in the 4x200 and 4x400-meter relays. The team of Micquan Gravely, Jamari Townsend, Milique Herron, and star football recruit Bryce West won the first race; while Townsend also teamed up with Isaiah McCallum, Jacob Rice, and Malik Davis in the second, setting a new event record with a time of 1:26.68.

Though the boys came in second to Glenville, it was actually a banner weekend for Woodridge, as the girls bested Marengo Highland by just five points in D-II to take home the program's first-ever state championship. Anna Rorrer aided the effort with a victory in the 300-meter hurdles.

In the individual realms, Keystone's Ryne Shackelford certainly made headlines by taking home his third straight championship in the boys long jump. His distance of 25 feet, 6 1/2 inches was technically a state record, although it will not officially count in the record books after administrators ruled he was partly assisted by the wind.

However, the star of the show may have come from the boys seated division, where Garrettsville Garfield's Conner Hunt finished first in the 100, 400, and 800-meter dashes. Even more incredible? He's only a freshman.
