The City Club of Cleveland on Friday hosted a forum on the continued presence of Native American mascots and images in sports, and the impact those images can have on others.

This comes as the Cleveland Indians baseball team is considering changing the name it has had since 1915, with the club announcing the beginning of such discussions following the death of George Floyd and subsequent protests. The Washington Football team has already dropped its "Redskins" moniker, which has caused controversy for decades.

"Team names are just one facet of a much broader conversation that’s occurring at this moment over modern Indigenous representation, inclusion, and the stories we tell ourselves about America and its history," the City Club wrote.

Speakers for the event included:

  • Crystal Echo Hawk - Founder & CEO of IllumiNative & a member of the Pawnee Nation
  • Dr. Stephanie A. Fryberg - University of Michigan psychologist & a member of the Tulalip Tribes
  • DeLanna Studi - Cherokee performance artist & activist who is the author of "AND SO WE WALKED: An Artist's Journey Along the Trail of Tears"
