CLEVELAND — Cleveland Indians coach and former catcher Sandy Alomar was honored on Saturday night by the ALS Association Northern Ohio Chapter at the Global Center for Health Innovation.
Alomar received the 'Iron Horse Award.' The award pays homage to Lou Gehrig, ALS’s first famous victim whose name has become synonymous with the disease.
The award recognizes a member of the sports community whose dedication to the community emulates Lou Gehrig’s passion and commitment to baseball. Previous winners include Tribe pitching legend Bob Feller, former Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel, and the owners of the Indians, the Dolan family.
“I am honored to help promote awareness of ALS, a horrific disease, which has too frequently affected the sports community," Alomar said in a statement. To be recognized with this award that remembers one of the all-time greats of baseball is truly a privilege.”
