The Indians' already-thin outfield took another hit Saturday, as the club placed Tyler Naquin on the 1-day disabled list with a right hip strain.
It's the second time this year Naquin has been sent to the DL; he previously missed a month back in May and June with hamstring issues. It is unknown how long he will be out this time.
Mostly playing in a platoon role, Naquin has hit .264 this year with three home runs and 23 RBIs. His defense has also improved, with five defensive runs saved.
The loss of Naquin underscores a continued need for outfield depth in Cleveland, especially with Lonnie Chisenhall and Bradley Zimmer also hurt and all other active outfielders (not counting Michael Brantley) struggling at the plate. The team has been reportedly exploring options in the trade market, including Baltimore's Adam Jones and Texas' Joey Gallo.
To replace Naquin, the Tribe called up right-handed pitcher Adam Plutko from Triple-A Columbus. Plutko is 4-2 with a 4.87 ERA in eight big league appearances this season, and the coaching staff likely wanted him as insurance Saturday night for scheduled starter Mike Clevinger, who is battling an illness. MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports Greg Allen will be brought up on Monday.
