REPORT: Cleveland Cavaliers were one number away from winning NBA Draft Lottery

According to an ESPN Report, the Cleveland Cavaliers were one number away from winning the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery.

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers were close to winning, but the numbers were against them on Tuesday night, and not just when they took on the Boston Celtics in Game 2 of the 2018 NBA Eastern Conference Finals at TD Garden in Boston.

According to a report from Zach Lowe of ESPN, the Cavaliers were one of several teams that were one number away from winning the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery, which was held at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, Illinois, ahead of Game 2.

Along with the Sacramento Kings, Orlando Magic and Phoenix Suns, the Cavaliers were one of four teams that had a combination of the first three numbers drawn, six, nine and 12. However, the Suns were the winners, as the final number drawn was a “one.”

According to an ESPN Report, the Cleveland Cavaliers were one number away from winning the 2018 NBA Draft Lottery.

Rather than winning the NBA Draft Lottery for the fifth time in their history, including what would have been the second time because of a trade with another team, the Cavaliers will make the No. 8 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The 2018 NBA Draft will be held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday, June 21.

The Cavaliers hold the eighth pick in the 2018 NBA Draft because of an offseason trade with the Celtics.

In exchange for multi-time NBA All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, the Celtics sent forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic, point guard Isaiah Thomas and a pair of draft picks to the Cavaliers.

One of those picks was an unprotected selection originally held by the Brooklyn Nets. The 2018 first-round pick was dealt to Boston in a trade for small forward Paul Pierce, center Kevin Garnett and guard Jason Terry, as well as Brooklyn’s first-round picks in 2014 and 2016.

Prior to 2018, the Cavaliers made the No. 8 overall pick in the NBA Draft on four occasions.

With their previous four selections at No. 8, the Cavaliers have chosen center DeSagana Diop out of Oak Hill Academy (2001), point guard Andre Miller from Utah (1999), point guard Ron Harper from Miami (Ohio) (1986) and small forward Campy Russell out of Michigan (1974).
