CLEVELAND — 6:54 p.m.-OU advances in MAC Women’s Tournament
The Ohio University Bobcats have advanced in the 2019 Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The second-seeded Bobcats (26-4) earned their trip to the semifinals of the MAC Tournament with a 72-56 victory over the Northern Illinois Huskies (19-13), the No. 7 team in the field, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio Wednesday night.
Sophomore forward Gabby Burris led the Bobcats in scoring with 19 points on eight-of-14 shooting from the field. Burris added five rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal while finishing the game plus-19 in scoring differential.
Redshirt freshman forward Erica Johnson tallied 18 points and finished off a double-double with 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Cece Hooks (16) and junior guard Amani Burke (12) reached double figures in scoring, too.
Sophomore point guard Gabby Nikitinaite scored a game-high 23 points, while senior guard Mikayla Voight added 14 in the loss to the Bobcats.
With the win, the Bobcats advance to Friday afternoon’s semifinals, where they will take on the winner of the fourth and final quarterfinal matchup of the day between the Toledo Rockets and Miami University RedHawks.
6:30 p.m.-OU expands lead to 20 points
The Ohio University Bobcats outscored the Northern Illinois Huskies by eight points in the third quarter and extended their lead to 20, 57-37, heading into the final period of their 2019 Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament quarterfinal matchup at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland Wednesday.
As a team, the Bobcats shot nine of 18 from the field (50 percent) despite making only two of their six looks from three-point range in the third quarter.
Defensively, the Bobcats limited the Huskies to a five-of-14 showing from the field in the third quarter.
6:00 p.m.-OU leads by 12 after first half
Gabby Burris’ layup in the final minute of the second quarter gave the Ohio University Bobcats at 37-25 halftime lead over the Northern Illinois Huskies in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio Wednesday.
The Bobcats shot 41.7 percent from the field (15 of 36) and five of 15 from three-point range, while limiting the Huskies to a nine-of-30 showing from inside the arc and a three-for-10 effort from long distance.
Redshirt freshman Erica Johnson led the Bobcats with 15 points to go along with four rebounds, one steal and one assist, while Burris, a sophomore forward, added 10 points in 20 minutes of action.
Point guard Gabby Nikitinaite scored a team-high 13 points for the Huskies in the first half.
5:33 p.m.-OU leads NIU by 11 after first quarter
Despite allowing a buzzer-beating pull-up three-pointer in transition, the Ohio University Bobcats held a double-digit lead over the Northern Illinois University Huskies after one quarter in the 2019 Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio Wednesday.
The Bobcats, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, enjoyed a 23-12 lead over the seventh-seeded Huskies heading into the second quarter.
Redshirt freshman forward Erica Johnson led the way with 12 points on four-of-nine shooting, including a two-for-five mark from beyond the three-point arc. Johnson added two rebounds, one block and a steal in nine minutes.
As a team, the Bobcats shot 47.4 percent from the floor (nine of 19) and three of eight (37.5 percent) from three-point range in the first quarter.
5:00 p.m.-OU set to battle NIU in MAC Women’s Tournament
The Ohio University basketball team is set to play the Northern Illinois Huskies in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio tonight.
The Bobcats (25-4, 14-4 MAC) entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and earned a bye into the quarterfinals, while the seventh-seeded Huskies (19-12, 10-8 MAC) advanced to Cleveland with a 70-69 victory over the Western Michigan Broncos.
During the regular season, the Bobcats won their only game against the Huskies, 69-53, on the road in DeKalb, Illinois.
The winner of the Ohio University-Northern Illinois matchup will take on the winner of the Toledo-Miami game in the MAC Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon.
