Reportedly, the University of Akron has fired football coach Terry Bowden after seven years leading the Zips' program.

The University of Akron football team appears headed in a new direction.

After Saturday’s 28-3 loss to the University of South Carolina concluded the Zips’ season with a 4-8 record, the Akron administration felt it was time to move on from veteran coach Terry Bowden, as multiple outlets reported Sunday that he has been fired after seven seasons at the helm of the Mid-American Conference program.

During his seven seasons with Akron, Bowden went 35-52 with his two best seasons, 2015 and 2017, serving as the only time he finished above the .500 mark and advanced to postseason play. Akron posted an 8-5 mark in 2015 and 7-7 record in 2017 and earned bowl invitations in both years.

Bowden was 1-1 in bowl games with Akron, as they won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl following the 2015 season and suffered a setback in the Boca Raton Bowl in 2017.

During the 2017 season, Bowden led the Zips to the MAC East Division Championship and an appearance in the MAC Championship Game against the University of Toledo.

Earlier this year, Bowden led the Zips to a road win at Northwestern, who despite going winless in non-conference play, won the Big Ten West Division and advanced to the Big Ten Championship Game for the first time in school history.
