Cleveland Browns NFL Draft Recap: Without selections in 1st or 2nd round, GM Andrew Berry earns praise after finding value in middle, late rounds

The Browns added 4 players on offense, 3 on defense in days 2 and 3 of the draft.

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns came away from the 2023 NFL Draft with seven new additions to the roster to compliment what, on paper, looks to be a squad primed to make a playoff push in the upcoming season.

The Browns were without selections in the first two rounds, including a third round pick, due to the Deshaun Watson and Elijah Moore trades.

Without access to the top 73  picks in the 2023 draft, the Browns were able to come away with a lot of value according to analytics and NFL reporters.

The team's full selection of picks from the third through the seventh round can be seen below.

GM Andrew Berry placed a heavy precedent on adding depth in the trenches using four of the team's seven picks on offensive and defensive linemen.

The addition of Tennessee WR Cedric Tillman with their first selection in the draft added yet another weapon to a bloated receiver room. Options likely locked in at the position currently stands as follows:

  • Amari Cooper
  • Donovan Peoples-Jones
  • Elijah Moore
  • Marquise Goodwin
  • David Bell

Options likely on the bubble include:

  • Anthony Schwartz
  • Michael Woods ll
  • Jakeem Grant
  • Demetric Felton
  • Jaelon Darden

Tillman will slot in as the likely 6th WR on the roster barring anything unexpected on the list of locks. If the Browns keep Jakeem Grant to contribute in the return game, it may complicate the equation if they are unwilling to keep more than six receivers on the roster at once.

After the draft concluded on Saturday evening, the praise began flowing in for Andrew Berry and his staff for the value they were able to obtain without premium picks early in days one and two.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) joined in on the praise as the Browns came away with multiple selections that had first or second round grades on their big board.

The picks of the two Buckeye offensive lineman (Jones and Wypler) were especially looked upon highly as both fell to day three despite high pre-draft rakings.

The team ended their draft in the seventh round trading pick 223 to the division rival Ravens for their 2024 sixth round pick adding another upgraded asset in next year's draft.

The Browns also signed several undrafted free agents following Saturday's event. The list can be seen below and will be updated as more are signed.

  • Mohamoud Diabate, linebacker, Utah
  • Hassan Hall, running back, Georgia Tech
  • Thomas Greaney, tight end, Albany
  • Lonnie Phelps, defensive end, Kansas
