Cleveland Browns S Damarious Randall reacts to Cincinnati Bengals hiring Hue Jackson

On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Bengals announced they have hired former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson as a special assistant to the head coach.

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns are currently in the middle of their bye week.

But when they return, they'll find a familiar face on the opposing sideline.

On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Bengals announced they have hired Hue Jackson as a special assistant to head coach Marvin Lewis for the remainder of the season. Jackson, of course, served as the head coach of the Browns as recently as two weeks ago before he was fired following a 3-36-1 tenure over the course of two-plus seasons in Cleveland.

Coincidentally -- or perhaps, conveniently -- Cincinnati still has two games against the Browns remaining on its schedule, including a Nov. 25 date following Cleveland's ongoing bye week. According to Browns safety Damarious Randall, that's precisely why the Bengals re-hired Jackson, who will assist Cincinnati's defense, despite having been an offensive specialist throughout his coaching career.

Although adding Jackson to their staff ahead of two games against the Browns is a potential benefit for the Bengals, it's worth noting that his professional history with Lewis dates back to 2004. From 2004-2006, Jackson served as the wide receivers coach on Lewis' staff before taking an offensive coordinator position with the Atlanta Falcons. Upon being fired by the Oakland Raiders following his first head coaching stint in 2011, Jackson returned to Cincinnati, where he spent four seasons in multiple assistant coach positions, including a stint as offensive coordinator from 2014-15.

Upon being hired by the Browns in 2016, Jackson was reportedly pitched an arrangement with the Bengals that would see him eventually succeed Lewis as Cincinnati's head coach. Jackson, obviously, declined the offer.

Whether or not a similar structure could be on the table for Jackson in the future remains to be seen. For now, Jackson will focus on assisting Lewis for the Bengals final seven games this season -- two of which will stand out more than the rest.
